Here is my progress as a complete beginner to pixel art. There is something incredibly endearing about the blocky little characters that I just can’t refuse. GIF.As mentioned in my previous blog post, I’d decided to use a pixel art style for Thawed. It felt like a great starting point as it was mostly one colour but still had some unique features that I would need to highlight. After finalising the games controller, my partner decided it was time to up the ante. I figured the best way to do this was start small and work my way up Games Controller (16×16 pixels)I wasn’t feeling confident enough to jump straight into a human sprite so I instead opted to create something I was all too familiar with. Constructing Lines and Curves in Pixel ArtIn order to create my main character sprite, I had to first find a pixel grid size that was suitable. The videos I found most helpful as a complete pixel art noob were: A quick search turned up Asesprite, and at over 5000 overwhelmingly positive reveiws for only $19.99 on Steam it was an offer too good to refuse.Additionally, I found a great YouTube channel ( Brandon James Greer) that covers various topics on pixel art, ranging from the basics to more advanced topics. That mission was to create the best character sprite the world has ever seen! But first, I needed find a suitable tool to create this masterpiece.
![]() 2D Zombie Survival Games Free Zombie SurvivalI plan to implement a gearing/armor system to the game so I wanted to start with a base layer that can be built upon.Although I was pleasantly surprised with our 16×32 pixel creation, I wanted to see what we could get out of a slighter larger sprite. You may be wondering why our hero is in his underpants, it’s not a creepy sex thing I promise. Main character (16×32 pixels)Having played Stardew Valley and been a big fan of the art style I decided to give this sprite size a try. I did some research on various game sprite sizes and saw that Stardew Valley used a 16×32 pixel character sprite. It had occured to me that 16×16 pixels wouldn’t be large enough to support the type of main character I envision. I think it turned out great… but I may be quackers. What could look more adorable than a pixelated duck you ask? A pixelated baby yoda is definitely up there.Feeling confident in my pixel art abilities, it was time to tackle the mission. But it is true, and it all changes today.I have always had a passion for zombie survival games. That’s likely not what you were expecting me to say on a game development blog. Instead, I’m a software developer, with no game development experience. It has also taught me that a pixel art beginner can create some great characters given a bit of love and attention.I should start by saying I’m not a blogger. In fact, I didn’t even manage to complete the outline before deciding to call it quits.I’m unsure which sprite size is my favourite, I’m currently leaning towards the 24×48 pixel sprite but the 16×32 pixel sprite has some great character that really shines through. This deep dive into pixel art has definitely taught me that even within the confines of small pixel grids you still have room to flourish and create some beautiful ideas. However, it soon became apparent that it would be too time consuming creating all sprites at this higher resolution. Tom anderson guitars costHence the name, Thawed. The plan is to make a zombie survival game that focuses on the fun aspects of realism, while keeping a casual feel to the game. This was written in reference to the ongoing Covid pandemic, however I thought a fun concept would be to take this and apply it to a zombifying pathogen. These unknown pathogens can wreak havoc on humanity as our immune systems have not adapted to these mutations before. The PlanI was reading an article about global warming that mentioned contagious pathogens could be released from the melting ice caps that have been laying dormant for thousands of years. Enough is enough, too many games have been played where I’ve starved to death while seemingly being unable to find any food. One species may be smarter in how they work together to hunt, while another species may be dumb and resort to a more typical horde style attack. I plan to include various zombie species that react/swarm the player differently. Advanced zombie mechanics. ![]() ![]() For now, I am looking forward to the challenge. That may be a decision I come to regret if the game is still unfinished in 10 years time. I plan to do all the artwork, sounds and development. The next stepsAfter writing about the various tasks I’m about to undertake throughout this process, it’s just struck me that I may have bitten off more than I can chew.I find the best way to tackle mammoth projects is to break them down into manageable chunks. Instead, I’m going take this as an opportunity to learn piano and get some Project Zomboid-esque doomsday piano vibes going. I grew up playing in various brass bands and I’m planning to apply some of that knowledge to the game.Unfortunately I don’t think a soundtrack composed solely from brass instruments is at the top of anybodies wish list. The soundThankfully unlike the design side of things, I do have a musical background. More recently after speaking with these illusive beasts, I have come to believe it is something that can be learned… at least I’m hoping that is the case.I have decided to build Thawed in a pixel art style, it is a style I am very fond of and I’m hoping that I can learn it without having to utilise any complex image editors. However, it has always been one of those things that I’ve never been proficient at and I assumed it was just one of those skills you are born with – you know who I mean, the creative types you often see in the bright colours and fancy glasses.
